defense, we lose. and mitt romney, john mccain if you go before that, refused to play offense. the president played offense. the people were stunned and republicans were stunned he was going out there and playing offense on abortion and planned parenthood and running ads. what we did, respond, we're not that bad. the president of the united states as a state senator in illinois voted for infanticide, this man has the most radical record on issues of any president in history. we didn't bring them up at all. unless you feel comfortable in your skin on any issue, then you're going to have a hard time playing offense on that issue. we had candidates that didn't feel comfortable on these issues and we played defense and therefore we lost. >> this is the idea. this warning that if romney loses there would be people who said you weren't conservative enough. >> it wasn't -- mitt romney held the same positions that i did, but he didn't weave them into the discussion. here's our vision for america. here's -- let me talk to all voters. i always say -- mitt romney focused as well as he should

little bit different level. the department of defense is very comprehensively represented here at fleet week this year, more so than ever before. we have a representative from the assistant secretary of defense for homeland defense and american security affairs in the audience and they were here in august when we did our exercise with the city. fema is well represented and we have several defense coordinating officers here over the past couple of days. certainly the california national guard is represented heavily here. obviously they are going to be the first guys to respond to a disaster and they have several interesting roles not only from a state perspective but as they get federalized or with the dual status commander managing federal response and federal authorities of military authorities flowing in. and most significantly, we're represented today with the commander of northern command, general jackoby. as you know, defense report to civil authorities is not a primary mission area for the department of defense. we have codified it in policy over the years and certainly thin

army decided that those lands were no longer necessary for national defense. so, that strategic entrance to this harbor was the last land that our troops and sailors and marines and soldiers would see if they departed for the pacific theater in world war ii and korea and vietnam, and also the first thing they would see upon returning back to the bay area. so, between the presidio and the head lands, we now have wonderful park lands that have been converted. we call it converting from post to park. repurposing those lands from national defense to environmental defense. and i believe it is probably the most accessful base conversion in the united states. if you haven't been to the presidio, i think you should try and make that. if you're from out of town, it's a spectacular transition there. so, these golden gate national parks that i happen to be the superintendent of has now become after 40 years the second most visited national park in our country. we get 14 million people a year that come to our parks. it has spectacular coastline, includes muir wood, alcatraz, we get to tell

proposals. with one glaring exception. neither proposal specifically includes defense cuts. in fact, both sides have gone out of their way to say they shouldn't happen. but if there's no deal, they may happen anyway. in today's "deep dive" how the sequester could impact our military, our economy, and our safety. the budget control act calls for about a trillion dollars in automatic cuts to begin in january if laes no deal. half would come from domestic spending. we'll dig deeper into that. today spes cifically about the half that comes from security and defense. the cuts on that side amount to $492 billion over the next ten years but they aren't across the board. the president has promised to exempt military personnel and veterans affairs. let me start this here. here is the $492. that, by the way, this $492 billion is on top of another $450 billion cuts the d.o.d. was planning to make to cut waste and trim unnecessary programs. it's prompted mrenting of hand wringing on both sides. >> we can't afford another $500 billion in cuts in our defense budget on top of the $500 billion in c
